Our show at Kingsborough Community College on May 6th was amazing. Students from all over the world go to that school and it is a beautiful, large, beachside campus. We all met in Chinatown and took the Q train almost to the end. It’s mostly above ground so you don’t feel too cooped up. I don’t think Mr. Huang is actually on the train much. Everyone else was totally comfortable. Sheut Lee just bounces up and down the stairs, and she turns 80 soon. We learned that Ellen’s uncle and husband shared a night/day shift bed when they first came to NYC. She told the audience this and then whispered to me, “I never told you this.” It was very touching. We also heard Mr. Tsui talk about coming to NYC as a stowaway on a ship. One much older member of the audience asked why our performers never learned English. She was almost indignant about it, and I felt really awkward about the question. But Mr. Tsui explained to everyone, on behalf of the whole group of performers, that he just never had time because he was working so hard for so many years. And that was that. We had a big Chinese banquet afterward which was a lot of fun.
